deposit cash at an ATM in Uganda

I bet the majority of us have grown to assume the only and main function of an automated teller machine (ATM) was to dispense cash for account holders and not to deposit. If you belong to that group that only uses ATMs to make cash withdrawals, you aren’t alone. For most banks in Uganda, you can deposit cash into your account through these ATM machines. I’ve come to appreciate just how this feature can save you long queues by simply performing these transactions at one’s convenient time with minimal traffic. Having gone through this process for a few months now, cash deposits have been so easy, and convenient and I’d be mean not to share.

How to make instant cash deposits at an ATM

Step 1: Locate a supported ATM machine (not all ATMs will support this feature)

Find a Deposit-enabled ATM first, then do whatever else is necessary. Locate an ATM that accepts cash deposits using your bank’s website or mobile app. Keep in mind that some ATMs are only withdrawal-enabled, thus you will not be able to deposit cash.

Step 2: Go to your account and pick the Transaction type.

If you don’t have an ATM card of the account holder/beneficiary, some banks, including Standard Chartered Bank, Stanbic Bank, and Equity and you’ll follow the steps below;

  1. On the ATM menu, select “deposits”
  2. Select “deposit” then “account”
  3. Enter the account number of the holder
  4. Put the total cash in the slot
  5. Wait for the machine to process your transaction
  6. Confirm the transaction then pick your receipt

And if you do have your debit card, you will be prompted to insert it into the ATM and enter your PIN for verification. After successfully logging in to your account, you may see a number of transaction options on the screen.

To begin the transaction, select the deposit option. If you have more than one account, you may be required to select the account to which you are making the deposit.

Step 3: Insert the total cash in the envelope or slot

Insert the exact bills into the machine of the amount you want to deposit. Some banks allow you to deposit bills directly into the machine. Other banks may provide an envelope to use for your deposit. If an envelope is required, check to see if you’re required to fill out any information on the envelope itself before proceeding.

Step 4: Confirm the amount, then pick your receipt

Once your cash has been deposited and your transaction has been completed, don’t forget to print your confirmation receipt and collect your card

FAQS & Knowledge

Qn. Can I Deposit Cash at any ATM in Uganda?

Yes, you can make a cash deposit at an ATM. However, not all ATMs are the same. Some ATMs accept deposits while others only accept withdrawals. This implies you won’t be able to deposit money at the withdraw-enabled ATMs.

Qn. How Long Does it Take for ATM Deposits to reflect on my Account?

Deposits at intelligent ATMs (touchscreen ATMs) reflect on your account immediately while deposits done on non touch screen ATMs take 2 working days to reflect. Therefore, if you have not received the cash deposit notification, relax and be patient. The delay in cash reflecting on the recipient’s account depends on how deposits are processed.

Qn. How Much Can You Deposit in an ATM?

There is usually no limit on the amount you can deposit in an ATM, but your bank might limit the number of items you can deposit at once.
